Resolving to make amends to her employer, Marion makes a few calculations based on how much the escapade has cost her. She then takes a shower. Suddenly, a mysterious figure enters the bathroom — shadowy through the shower curtain — and stabs Marion to death.
Even those who haven't seen Psycho in a hot minute know its iconic shower scene by heart: Marion Crane is bathing in her Bates Motel bathroom when Norman storms in to murder her with a knife.
Marion wants to marry Sam, but debts inherited from his father and his own alimony payments do not leave him enough money to support her as he would like.

But the smile comes around in the film again, though not on her face. Marion stops at a small hotel run by the awkward, eager-to-please Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins), where after some thought, she decides to drive back to Phoenix the next day and return the money.

Why did Norman Bates smile at the end?
As complete control of his mind and actions fell away to "Mother," Norman managed a sinister smile to show that he was no longer himself. He stood trial for the murders and was found not guilty by reason of insanity.
Instead of constructing a classic sandwich, Marion first eats a piece of ham, which she cuts with a fork, before buttering a slice of bread and making an open-faced sandwich with another slice of meat, or possibly cheese.
The climax of the novel and film reveals that Norman murdered Marion while under the control of an alternate personality—one taking the form of his mother, whom he had murdered ten years before.
After Norman discovers the murder, he disposes of Marion's body and her possessions — including the stolen money which he fails to notice — by sinking her car into a nearby swamp. Marion's body is eventually recovered after Lila and Sam expose Norman Bates as the actual murderer.
That Marion's death isn't the only twist in Psycho makes it all the more impressive. The truth about Norman Bates and his murderous “mother” is shocking in its own right, but it's the thrilling conclusion to a story. Marion's death is an abrupt and unexpected ending of a story and the start of another one.
Outside the cabin, Norman moves Marion's car so that its trunk is facing her cabin door. He then puts Marion's plastic-wrapped body in the trunk of her car, along with all of her belongings - including the folded up newspaper containing the stolen money, which he does not discover.
As well as the question of mental illness and culpability, Norman can be a likeable character to spend time with. This is a man who's so 'polite' that he can't even utter the word “bathroom”; even after Hitchcock has shown us the first toilet in cinema, his antagonist cannot say the word aloud.
Marion says she'd like to. She opens her suitcase and looks for a place to hide the money. Eventually she decides to put it in a newspaper, which she then puts on the bedside table.
When Dylan tells him that Norma is dead, Norman flies into a rage and attacks him with a knife, forcing Dylan to shoot him in self-defense. As he dies, Norman sees a vision of his mother embracing him.
In Psycho (1960), Marion's bra changes from white (angelic) to black after she steals the $40,000 to show that she has done something wrong and evil. Similarly, her purse changes from white to black after she steals the money.
And for a film released in 1960, Psycho's two-minute scene still has the ability to shock. “The shower scene absolutely redefined cinema violence,” Philippe says. “He [Hitchcock] pushed the envelope as far as he possibly could."
After telling Norman her version of the truth – confessing that Norman had indeed killed his father but only to protect his mother – Norma dissuades Norman from suicide by kissing him fully on the lips. It was a passionate, loving kiss. Between mother and son.
Shortly afterward, Norman comes to check on Marion, only to discover her dead body. Horrified, he hurriedly cleans up the murder scene. Norman then puts Marion's body, her belongings, and the hidden cash in her car then sinks the car in a swamp.
She would sexually arouse her son Norman as a child and then physically punish him for getting aroused. She hypocritically says to Norman that all girls except herself are lustful sinners who want nothing but to have sex with him, despite her having a pedophilic and incestuous desire for him.

Near the end of Psycho, a psychiatrist explains what happened to Norman: that he had murdered his mother and her lover years earlier, after feeling abandoned by her.
Throughout the film, Norman Bates nibbles on candy corn. It was Perkins' idea to have the character do this, making him appear like a bird eating seed. Hitchcock chose candy corn because he said Perkins had a neck like a chicken, and that reminded him of a chicken eating corn.
He also speaks to himself in her voice and frequently dresses in her clothes; in his own mind, he becomes his mother in order to escape the awareness of her death and the guilt of having murdered her.
