The horror film ends with its antagonist, Valak, seemingly defeated, with Maurice no longer possessed and able to build a life with Sophie and Kate if he chooses. However, the character is destined to die later in The Conjuring universe, as the demon still latches onto him during an exorcism performed by the Warrens.
In The Conjuring, it was revealed that the exorcism didn't work on Maurice who eventually tried to kill his wife, only managing to shoot her in the arm, before killing himself.
