Durin and Elrond's friendship is tested once more when King Durin III discovers their secret mining of mithril, resulting in Elrond's banishment from Khazad-dûm. While Prince Durin is able to give Elrond a small fragment of mithril, the king soon strips him of his role as prince.
Durin and Elrond proved to be a very elvish dwarf and a very dwarven elf. Although they began The Rings of Power estranged, their loyalty and love for one another flourished. Durin even willingly disregarded his father and King's wishes to save the elves', but really Elrond's life by mining mithril.
We first get a hint at the real depth of feeling in their scenes together when Durin angrily admits he resents Elrond for staying away so long, for missing his wedding and the birth of his children.

Is Gimli related to Durin?
Gimli had wanted to accompany his father on the quest to reclaim Erebor, but at age 62 he was deemed too young. He was a remote descendant of Durin the Deathless, chief of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves and ancestor of the Longbeards.
In episode 7, King Durin III discovered his son Durin IV trying to mine more mithril for the elves. He disowned his son in one of the show's most heartbreaking scenes yet.
So it struck me the other day that Legolas' father Thranduil, the Elvenking, doesn't seem to get as much credit and respect as Elrond and Galadriel. Mainly because he never is given a Ring of Power.

The Balrog killed Durin VI, the Dwarf-King of Khazad-dûm, whereafter it was called Durin's Bane by the Dwarves. Avarice, principally for mithril, drove the dwarves to go too deep and awaken the Balrog. The Dwarves attempted to fight the Balrog, but its power was far too great for them.
Legolas first appears during the Council of Elrond, where he is sent as a messenger by his father, Thranduil, to give the council the news of Gollum's escape with the Elves of Mirkwood. He is then selected by Elrond to represent the Elves in the Company that sets out with Frodo on his quest to destroy the Ring.
Elrond does, of course, betray that oath by explaining the situation to Durin, admitting that his superiors sent him to the dwarf kingdom in the first place to expose their mithril supply.
Thorin, Fili, and Kili were the male heirs of the first line of Durin, the dominant line. They were the ones in line for the crown and the kingship, in that order. When they died, the first line of Durin was extinguished, but not the line altogether. The next male heir was Dain Ironfoot, Lord of the Iron Hills.

You may recall toward the end of the first season of The Rings of Power that Prince Durin IV's father, King Durin III stripped his son of all his titles and status. This move came as a result of Prince Durin IV's sharing mithril with Elrond. King Durin III viewed this as a betrayal in the ongoing dwarves v.
Owain Arthur's Durin IV is shown in The Rings of Power trailer footage holding a silvery nugget of metal, which he proclaims could be the "beginning of a new era." This ore was widely assumed to be mithril, and Durin III's chest most likely contains a chunk of the precious metal.
High King of the Elves Gil-galad soon learns of mithril's existence, insisting that Elrond work with Durin and his father, King Durin III, to mine the ore in order to stop a blight impacting Elvish lands.
Though neither is someone you'd wish to annoy, Galadriel is generally considered more powerful than Elrond in Lord of the Rings. Not only is she older than her Rivendell counterpart, but Galadriel witnessed the light from Valinor's Two Trees, giving her a mystic quality.

Her elder brothers were the twins Elladan and Elrohir.
In the Third Age, the more easily accessible seams of mithril were exhausted, and the Dwarves dug deeper until they disturbed a Balrog, a powerful fire-demon. It killed King Durin VI, acquiring the name Durin's Bane, and then Náin I, his son. The Dwarves abandoned Khazad-dûm and fled into Wilderland.
Gimli was born in the Blue Mountains during a time of exile for the Durin's Folk, about a century after the tragic destruction of Dale and the Sacking of Erebor by Smaug the Golden. His father was Glóin, a direct descendant of King Náin II and, through him, of Durin the Deathless.
