Horrified by what he could become, Hulk created an unconscious failsafe in his psyche that caused his body to revert to a powerless Bruce Banner whenever he got too angry. This also caused the Savage Green Hulk's mind to re-emerge in Banner's body, who couldn't understand why he was so weak.
The angrier Hulk gets, his mass increases in size in order to accommodate the increased strength. As Hulk becomes more powerful as anger increases, his strength continues to rise further and further. Why does Hulk transform when angry?
In Incredible Hulk #2, the Hulk started to appear with green skin, and in Avengers #3 (1963) Banner realized that his transformations were now triggered by surges of adrenaline in response to feelings of fear, pain or anger.
Because he is aware of how he feels, he is able to calm himself down to avoid turning into the Hulk. He has learned to manage his anger, and only turns into the Hulk when he is able to to help himself or others.
