When Dawes Sr. tries to take Michael's tuppence, he still holds onto it, demanding his money. It causes the customers in the bank to panic and make a run on the bank, demanding all their money from their accounts.
They pay a heavy price for it. One of Mary and Bert's adventures goes wrong as they upset the bank manager where their father Mr George Banks works and almost cause a run on the bank. As a result, George Banks is sacked from his job. Deflated he wonders how he is now going to support his family.
The next day, George arrives home a changed man, ready to have fun with his kids. He takes them out to fly a kite, and Mrs. Banks comes too. At the park, they run into the son of the deceased head of the bank, who gives George his job back—with a promotion to partner.
By the end of the movie, her actions (and manipulations) have made this upper-crust family a family again. She has taught them the power of love. And yet, at the moment the Bankses joyfully reunite, Mary Poppins can only look on from a distance. She's shut out, no thought given to her by her charges or her employers.
How long did Mary Poppins stay with the family banks?
When the children ask her how long she plans to stay with them, she tells them that she will stay until the wind changes. Although the wind does indeed change when Mary Poppins leaves the Banks family, I don't believe this is the wind that she meant to change when she made this promise to the children.
He is a long time friend of Mary Poppins, though their relationship is noted to be strictly platonic (but there are hints to suggest a more romantic interest between them). He is shown to be very much at ease with her magic and implies that she has helped numerous families using her powers.
