His name stems from the fact that he is the "47th" clone from a secret cloning project which forms the plot of the first Hitman game, Hitman: Codename 47. Agent 47 is a genetically-engineered assassin, created from the recombinant DNA of the world's five most dangerous criminals.

Does 47 feel pain?
While Katia searches for her father, 47 and a rival agent (Zachary Quinto) race to find her first. Agent 47 lacks the ability to feel pain and remorse — emotions that would get in the way of his trigger finger — while Katia is burdened by the constant fear that comes with her Spider Senses.
However, if we are to judge him by different standards. 47 is clearly a bad man. “I can do whatever I'm payed to” can pretty much summarize entirely why it would also make sense to call 47 an evil person.

His only display of affection was towards a runaway laboratory rabbit he adopted on August 21, 1970, displeasing Dr. Ort-Meyer. However, it died on May 2, 1972. Ort-Meyer noticed 47 crying and was surprised, as he'd never seen any of his clones do so before.

In the novel “Hitman: Enemy Within”, it is explained 47 sleeps on the floor behind his bed in case of a sudden ambush occurs. So when a hitsquad would break through the door the bed serves as cover and buys 47 a few extra seconds to equip his weapons. So I, for one, like that 47 only sleeps on the bedrol.
There is a meta reason. It's because hair looked like garbage in the original Hitman so they only put it on NPCs and gave the protagonist the Lex Luthor haircut. The barcode came not long after.
In HITMAN 2, Diana, 47 and the ICA initially work on behalf of Providence to kill off the Shadow Client's allies, but Diana and 47 defect after the latter learns that the Shadow Client is Subject 6/Lucas Grey, 47's long-lost childhood friend who remidns 47 they are to eliminate Providence for good.
