Purple Hearts follows a struggling songwriter Cassie (Sofia Carson) and a troubled marine Luke (Nicholas Galitzine). The movie portrays Cassie's struggle of not being able to afford her insulin as she has type 1 diabetes and Cassie and Luke decide to marry for the military benefits.
Cassie Salazar is a waitress/bartender and performs with her band, The Loyal, at a bar in America. Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes six months earlier, she struggles to afford insulin and works multiple jobs to try and make ends meet. One night, she serves a group of Marines who are soon to be deployed to Iraq.
On top of these scenes, Cassie is a person with type 1 diabetes who is courageous and unwilling to give up on her dreams. This quality was also important to show—many people living with diabetes are resilient, hardworking and unwaveringly passionate. Cassie lives up to that summarization and then some.

Sofia Carson, who plays the lead role of Cassie in the film, performs all eight songs from the soundtrack and co-wrote the first four tracks alongside Grammy nominee Justin Tranter.
“As of May 2023, Netflix has not indicated that a sequel is in the works. The chances of there being a Purple Hearts 2 are slim to none. The romantic drama wraps up pretty neatly, with Cassie and Luke ending up together. So, a continuation of the story seems unnecessary.”

Is Purple Hearts Based on a True Story? Directed by Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, it's an incredibly romantic movie, similar to the likes of Dear John, Allied and Atonement. Unfortunately, fans will be disappointed to know that the film is not based on a true story. It is based on Wakefield's novel, Purple Hearts.
Luke and Cassie's love is able to overcome all adversity by Purple Hearts' conclusion, but the couple's happy ending comes with some questions attached.

Cassie does call the Marine out for his statement, but Luke tells her to sit down which she does. Despite being in Netflix's top 10 movies of the week, the scene has been called out for being “blatantly anti-Arab anti-Hispanic racist misogynistic AND pro military propaganda” (via Twitter).
This is a sweet romance that teens will enjoy. It has sad moments, happy ones, and funny ones. Still mind out for infrequent strong language, a brief sex scene, an attempt of murder, and some drinking.
Cassie is a singer-songwriter and recently diagnosed type 1 diabetic who is rationing her insulin while working numerous jobs. In the beginning we see a few instances of Cassie testing her blood sugar, drawing the last units from her dwindling back up vial of insulin, and showing signs of dangerously high blood sugar.
After Luke's former drug dealer rats him out to police about his fake marriage, Luke is arrested and charged with fraud. In court, Luke pleads guilty, claiming he coerced Cassie into a marriage she didn't know was illegal.
After the show, she rushes to confess her love for Luke before he is sent off. Luke gives her his wedding ring and tells her "it's real now." As the credits play out, six months later, Luke and Cassie are a happily married couple at the beach where they're enjoying a picnic with Peaches.
Why did Luke want to marry Cassie in Purple Hearts?
Don't worry, everyone, Luke has a sister-in-law and nephew to humanize him. Luke is still in hock to the least threatening-looking drug dealer of all time, so he decides to marry Cassie to get extra money from the military to pay him off.
PURPLE HEARTS has a strong moral worldview that talks about loving others despite differences and caring for others in hard times. The movie shows the ramifications of lying, and the characters become better people from learning from their mistakes.
As is typically the case, the book is better than the movie, if only barely. A unique feature is the book's incredibly short chapters, some comprising only one page. The pacing of the book was also somewhat odd, with incredibly slow parts, and then seemingly incomprehensible time jumps.
Meanwhile, Luke and Cassie are starting to fall in love for real… until Cassie finds out about that drug dealer. Luke confesses he is a former addict, and he and Cassie fight. Cassie kicks Luke out, and tells Luke to tell his family that they are getting divorced.
But as we see in those final scenes, Cassie was unable to wipe Luke from her mind—and she was grateful that he pleaded guilty in order to save her from incarceration. As she performs a song she wrote about Luke, Cassie has a realisation that she is still in love with him, which ultimately leads her back to him.
Towards the end of the film, the sanctity of their love is threatened when someone outs them for the insincere motivation behind their wedding. When put on trial, Luke ends up pleading guilty to the illegal marriage, serving a six-month sentence in prison and facing a dishonorable discharge.
Sofia Carson sported tattoos for her recent movie, "Purple Hearts." In real life, Carson has no known tattoos. Carson revealed that she had a hand in picking some of her character's tattoos.
It is true that married military spouses are given free Tricare, the US military's healthcare plan. This is a huge plus for Cassie considering insulin is expensive for those dealing with diabetes. So while the characters of Luke and Cassie are not real, these marriages happen quite a lot in the US military.
“Any time you see Camp Pendleton in a shot, those are actual Marines who were stationed there when we filmed,” Rosenbaum says. “When we were at our deployment where we were cheating Iraq, those Marines were predominantly people that James Dever hired.
