Katniss is definitely afraid of something happening to her family, especially her little sis, but when it comes to her own safety, she can be fearless. Of course, she's worried about dying in the Games, but it doesn't keep her from getting in the face of just about every authority figure she meets.
She imagines all of the possible scenarios, but is most fearful that the Capitol people will go after Prim and her mother. She doesn't care nearly as much about herself as she does for them.
Then, in Mockingjay—Part 1, she struggles with her identity as she endures the psychological trauma of her second time in the arena and the knowledge that her friend Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) has been captured by the Capitol that put them in the Games in the first place.
What does she decide she will never do if she survives, and why does she decide this? She fears she will have to mentor the tributes in the next Hunger Games, only to watch them die horrible deaths. She swore to never have children so she would not see them die in the games.
Katniss comes close to crying, something she knows she mustn't do because it would indicate weakness to the other tributes and make her look vulnerable; thankfully, Haymitch distracts the crowd and the cameras by stumbling off stage.
When Peeta talks about how he hopes someone else will kill Thresh, Katniss starts to cry because she doesn't want anyone else to die, which is unacceptable from a tribute in the Hunger Games. Instead, she disguises her tears as homesickness.
All this is amidst a constant battle to procure food and water, and indeed she nearly dies of thirst in one of the Games. While she manages to escape both Games with her life, she is left suffering significant psychological distress and displays symptoms consistent with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
A ruthless dictator who doesn't care about the people of Panem, Snow manipulates those around him, including Katniss, in order to protect and grow his power. Since the end of Katniss' first Hunger Games, President Snow has been wary of Katniss and the power she wields over the districts.
To the knowledge of Panem's citizens, District 13 was completely destroyed by the Capitol during the First Rebellion, and it remained inhabitable during the events of the main series. At least, that's what they were led to believe. As revealed in Catching Fire, District 13 was very much up and running.
Captured by the Capitol at the end of the Quarter Quell, Peeta gets turned into his greatest fear: a piece in the Capitol's Game to be used against Katniss. He must fight to overcome what has been done to him and find his way back to Katniss through his tangled memories.
