Dr. Leonard McCoy, although usually referred to only as Bones, was revealed to have a middle initial in Star Trek III: The Search For Spock, when he is called Leonard H. McCoy. It was later revealed that the "H" in his name stands for Horatio in the novel "Provenance of Shadows", published in 2006.
In the original 1966-1969 television series, McCoy's nickname “Bones” derived from the old humorous term for a surgeon, “sawbones,” and was bestowed on him by Captain James T. Kirk.
DeForest Kelley, best remembered as “Star Trek's” Leonard “Bones” McCoy, died from stomach cancer on June 11, 1999, at the Motion Pictures and Television Fund Hospital in Los Angeles. He was 79.

Ambassador Spock was born in 2230 and lived until 2387 in the alternate timeline, he was cast back in time to 2258 and lived an additional five years until 2263. 2387–2230=157, 157+5 = 162. He died at approximately age 161 and 361 days.
McCoy was diagnosed with xenopolycythemia. He believed himself to only have a year to live, which he told Captain James T. Kirk, asking him to keep this news to himself. Because of this, he was susceptible to the chance for happiness which marriage to Natira, the Fabrini high priestess, afforded him.
Polycythemia is a real disease in which the body produces too many red blood cells and is not, by itself fatal. Xenopolycythemia would be an alien (xeno- = foreign, alien) variation of the disease.

Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley declined to appear as their characters Spock and Leonard McCoy. Nimoy felt there were story problems with the script and that Spock's role was extraneous.
Christopher Pike is a fictional character in the Star Trek science fiction franchise. He is the immediate predecessor to James T. Kirk as captain of the starship USS Enterprise.
Rounding out the iconic TOS trio, Doctor "Bones" McCoy, played by DeForest Kelley, had a slightly more straightforward timeline in the series. In order to demonstrate how close they truly were, and how much Kirk had “humanized” Spock, they would have him use the diminutive of James, which is Jim. This is a name used by those close to the Captain or in intimate moments of friendship.
