In portraying the giant spider, Dano faced a unique challenge: making a creature that may evoke aversion as endearing as possible. “I hope that Hanuš is a little bit scary at first, because he would be. I mean, he is a giant spider,” Dano told Netflix. “Spiders, especially hairy spiders, they're not for everybody.
Spaceman Director Johan Renck leaves it up to the audience to decide if Hanuš is real or a figment of Jakub's imagination. The level of impressionism in the film guides the viewer's interpretation, depending on their own experiences.

Spaceman Doesn't Confirm Whether Hanus Is Real Or Jakub's Manifestation. While Dano's Hanuš is easily the most wise and even adorable character in Spaceman, it's never fully determined by the end of the sci-fi drama whether he is real or a part of Jakub's imagination.
What happens to Hanuš at the end of Spaceman? Late in the film, it becomes clear that Hanuš is dying, being consumed by a parasite that destroyed his home world. As he and Jakub approach what Hanuš calls only “the Beginning,” they share one final moment adrift in the vacuum of space.
Hanuš insists that he isn't just a figment of Jakub's imagination, but yeah, pfft, right. Are we really to believe a giant alien spider just because he says he's actually a giant alien spider? Pull the other one. “No, he's one-hundred-percent real,” states Renck matter-of-factly.
The cloud is just the final stage, causing Jakub to want to get back home to be with Lenka. At this point, Hanuš dies and is eaten by the Gorompeds that remained on him. They may well be a metaphor for the guilt that gnawed away at Jakub -- a weight he has been carrying for years.

So you research about spiders and the symbolism, but for this it was more about age and wisdom because Hanuš has traveled for thousands of years throughout galaxies and throughout time. The key was in the history of the character. And there's a lot of freedom being in a dark vocal booth alone.
So when Hanuš died that also represented the rebirth of Jakub, he no longer is scared and alone and realizes he must love Lenka back the way she loved him. The Chopra Cloud is supposed to represent where the whole universe was born from, but also where it all goes to die, hence “the beginning and the end”.
Jakub did not make it back to Earth onscreen in Spaceman, but he appears to have been rescued by astronauts on a Korean spaceship after making it through the Chropra Cloud. Jakub is able to call Lenka from the Korean ship, where he appears safe and eventually homeward bound.
Spaceman is beautiful to look at and it features another great dramatic performance from Adam Sandler. The rest of the movie is a mixed bag with a rather lackluster story, some terrible pacing and a mostly wasted supporting cast. It's a little too slow and a little too philosophical. It goes downhill.
Just finished watching the new netflix film, Spaceman. I think it very much falls into the Lovecraftian realm. This was not a horror movie in any traditional sense though there is some sense of dread. I won't spoil anything, though if you have arachnophobia, it may not be the film for you.
