Docter's original idea featured a 30-year-old man dealing with monsters that he drew in a book as a child coming back to bother him as an adult. Each monster represented a fear he had, and conquering those fears caused the monsters to eventually disappear.
However, despite the film's status as a beloved modern classic, Monsters, Inc.'s story hides an unexpected theme. The ideas behind the film's story actually act as something of a Marxist fable, with the workers rising up to seize the means of production and overthrow the corrupt ruling class.

Sullivan (Sully) is a human child molester who fabricated the polarised human/monster worlds to cope with his guilt. The main character, Sully, invented the idea of a human world and a monster world so he could try and cope with/rationalise his actions towards children.
Background. Monsters, Inc. is an energy company that was founded in 1810 as Amalgamated Monsters Ltd. before taking on its current name in 1895. Its main duty is to provide all citizens in Monstropolis with energy in the form of captured screams collected from children.

Another reason why Randall chose Boo is because he did NOT, contrary to what some people believe, design the machine to kill or permanently harm human kids. What would be the point in doing that, knowing that human kids, disgusting or not, are still vital to Monster World economy?
