Al Simmons was a black man, and his first attempt to use his magic to disguise his grotesque appearance results in him becoming a blond-haired caucasian. Coming off Spider-Man, McFarlane found it odd that a hero covered head to toe by his costume would never be questioned as to what was underneath.
He possesses an instinct to protect the weak. Spawn does mean to do good and doesn't really have villainous goals, but that doesn't stop him from murdering, maiming, or mutilating people to do what he wants.
It goes without saying that Spawn was Image Comics' flagship superhero, and their most powerful character to date. Spawn would beat Superman not only because of his demonic powers, but because he had Hell's legions behind him.

Even with the MP going down every time he used 'his powers' he could still fight monsters, cyborgs and demons over several months to years and the counter only went down a little bit. Long story short, if Deadpool is capable of dying Spawn can kill him.
