"North Face" is based on the true story of a May 1936 attempt on the Eiger by four climbers: two Germans and two Austrians who meet on the mountain in the movie but began together in real life.
Did Clint Eastwood actually climb in the Eiger Sanction?
Special equipment and handheld cameras were employed to film the climbing sequences. Eastwood did his own climbing and stuntwork under dangerous conditions. Twenty-six-year-old British climber David Knowles died on the Eiger during the production.

Did Clint Eastwood do his own stunts in the Eiger?
Eastwood performed all his character's stunts in the film, except for the 2,500-foot-drop. For that particular scene, a dummy served as his stunt double.
The ridge is very exposed and narrow with good sections of steep climbing. The final section to the summit is typically on a snow fin using crampons and an ice axe. Our route down is long and difficult, requiring concentration, and climbers need to maintain lots of energy.

In addition to the excitement that climbing the Eiger North Face generates, I always recommend this 2 to 3 days program because: It is the biggest face of the entire Alps. It is one of the most famous mountaineering routes in history.
The climb via the North Col or North Side is much more accessible than through the South Side. In going through the north, climbers avoid facing the Khumbu Ice Falls, a time consuming stage. The Everest North Face route is more straightforward, technically speaking, than the South face.
