Moana's grandmother dies. This scene might be emotional for some children. The grandmother is reincarnated as a ray fish and guides Moana in the ocean. Later the grandmother appears as a ghost to help Moana believe in herself.
Scary, perilous scenes include run-ins with frightening, violent monsters (one made of lava, the other a giant crab) and with ocean storms and waves. Characters also go up against a ship full of adorable (but armed) coconut pirates, a character dies (offscreen), and a couple of male authority figures yell at Moana.
As an adolescent, Moana struggles to find her independence. She wants the independence and makes the decision to go beyond the reef to find Maui, the demigod and get back the heart of Te Fiti.
Moana isn't the first princess not to have a love interest. Princess Merida from Brave also didn't have one. The story was all about her not wanting go through with an arranged marriage and her relationship with her mother, and that movie was AMAZING.

How does Moana end?
Moana bids farewell to Maui and Te Fiti, returning home and reuniting with her parents. She takes up her role as chief and wayfinder, leading her people as they resume voyaging, accompanied by Maui.
