The Upside is a career best for Kevin Hart, and combined with the talents of Bryan Cranston, the two of them lift the film up above its standard story of an unlikely friendship to create a genuinely moving viewing experience.
One of the most original, creative and technically accomplished films of our time, Upside Down is a pure delight. Unfortunately, there's absolutely no character development, tossing a poorly realized and mundane love story at us that's furthered only by its nicely varnished visuals.
But after caring for Phillip, Dell realizes that there are much more important things in life. He starts caring for his ex-girlfriend and becomes more present in his son's life. By the end of the film, Dell is a genuine, caring person and Phillip is a man happy to be alive.
By the time Dell meets Phillip in The Upside, Phillip's wife has already died of cancer, and it is assumed that several years had passed since then. In reality, Phillippe's wife was still alive by the time Abdel began working as his caretaker, though she did die of cancer shortly thereafter.
