Director Bernardo Bertolucci said, "The gay sex was in the first script, but I had a feeling that it was just too much stuff. It became redundant." Actor Michael Pitt said in an interview, "It was in the script and it's what I'd signed to do. But they said we weren't going to do that."
Thanks to its explicit sex and full frontal nudity, the film has inevitably been dubbed First Tango in Paris - a nostalgic echo of the director's classic 1970s sex drama.
"The Dreamers", Bernardo Bertolucci's NC-17 rated movie about sex, riots and film in 1968 Paris is a meaningful and worthwhile film. In fact, parts of it are so good that when it loses a lot of steam in the second hour, it hurts.
This movie can be enjoyed by both older children (seven and over) and adults. An important message in this movie is that sometimes you must draw on willpower and determination to follow a dream through.
Parents need to know that Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story includes scenes of family tensions, involving a young girl and her parents, and her grandfather. The movie features an early, brief scene where a racehorse stumbles on the track and breaks its leg (this might be difficult for younger viewers).
The first time Isabelle and Matthew make love, she starts to bleed. She was a virgin, much to his surprise. Theo rubs his hands between her legs and they come up bloody. Matthew does the same thing and is at first mortified, but then overcome by lust.
Only persons age 18 years and over will be permitted. The film may contain explicit sex scenes, an accumulation of sexually-oriented language, and/or scenes of excessive violence.
Matthew falls in love with both of them, mostly because they are inseparable, until a brick is hurled through the apartment window, shattering with it Matthew's hope for a happy throuple. The film ends with everyone putting on their pants and confronting the clamour outside, followed by a parting of ways.
Matthew simply turns and walks away. He ends a chapter in his life just like that, it was strange and beautiful and terrifying- and now it's over. It is a melancholy ending, Bertolucci is essentially saying that these characters are beyond saving even from themselves, all Matthew do is to save himself.
Theo and Isabelle (Louis Garrel, Eva Green) are 19-year-old twin siblings and native Parisians, the progeny of an English mother and a French poet-father who all live together in a labyrinth apartment filled with books, wine and privilege of all sorts (financial, intellectual, cultural).
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2005 and released theatrically on October 21, 2005 by DreamWorks Pictures.
