In the comics, Thanos is a mutant member of the race of superhumans known as the Titanian Eternals. The character possesses abilities common to the Eternals, and is able to demonstrate invulnerability and superhuman strength, speed, and stamina, among other qualities.
Thanos is one of the main antagonists of the Marvel Universe. He is considered to be one of the most powerful and dangerous villains to be created by Marvel. He is a powerful alien warlord born on Saturn's moon, Titan, born to the race of demigods known as "Eternals".
Thanos also has a brother, Starfox (AKA Eros), who he was always jealous of, as Starfox was handsome and popular. Still, Thanos is an Eternal, a type of super human who, according to the Celestials, was meant to be a protector of Earth. And, with a twisted mind, he took his cosmic duty to heart.
Thanos is not a Celestial. However, he is an Eternal. Kind of. In the Marvel Universe, Thanos hailed from the ruined planet of Titan (itself based on Saturn's moon).

An Eternal getting a Deviant-like mutation was later dubbed “Deviant Syndrome,” or the way Thanos looks with his purple skin and ridged chin. (Of the two sons, he's the only one with this condition; Eros looks like a regular Eternal, something that Thanos naturally hated his brother for.)
