Katniss later met Gale in the woods and taught him how to shoot, eventually giving him one of her bows. She used her bow to supply food for her family over the next four years and was able to shoot each animal directly in the eye.

Just like Katniss, Gale was able to hunt to find food for himself and could survive in the wilderness. He was very self-sufficient in survival skills and was able to defend himself. These were all skills that would serve him well as the narrative progressed.
Ultimately, in Mockingjay, it was undeniable that Katniss was completely in love with Peeta. Even though both Gale and Peeta are great men who wanted the best for Katniss, there's no doubt Peeta was kinder, and more loyal and understanding. These qualities made Peeta way better as a character and as a love interest.
The skills and qualities she developed to cope with the everyday challenges of being poor, including her ability to hunt, her toughness, and her resourcefulness, turn out to be what keeps her alive through the Games. During the weeks over which the Games occur, Katniss's character does not fundamentally change.
In the end, Katniss and Gale grew apart, as many childhood friends and young loves do. She needed something different in her life, and with Gale's link to Primrose's death, Katniss found a reason to cut ties. If Katniss ever wanted to find comfort again, she knew she had to return to Peeta for the long term.
When Gale is most in pain is when Katniss kisses him, and this is true again as we see her answer Gale's pain with a kiss. She wants to give Gale what he wants, but she can't yet completely commit to him, as she must think of her family and Peeta and being the Mockingjay for the revolution.
Gale was helping the team by putting in suggestions and helped also by defense and offense in the attack on the capitol. He designed a bomb that set off near/in the hospital where Prim was working. Prim does die in this scene, along with many patients.

As Katniss gets to know Finnick during the Quarter Quell, she sees he is in fact loyal, dutiful, and caring. For example, despite Mags being a burden on his chances of survival, Finnick does everything he can to keep the eighty-year-old alive because, as we learn, she was his mentor and he genuinely cares about her.
