Grindelwald, often called a “postcard-perfect” ski resort, boasts with its charming mountainscape. The beautiful resort is nestled proudly at the foot of Eiger and Wetterhorn Mountains.
Grindelwald is a charming little town at the very base of the Eiger Mountain and one of the two towns within the region that serves as almost a base barrier to the Swiss Alps.
Grindelwald. One of the true alpine hubs of the European Alps, the village of Grindelwald is known primarily for one thing, the Eiger. Dominating the view from town, the Eiger's famous Nordwand (North Wall) rises nearly 3000 meters straight up.
The three mountains of the ridge are commonly referred to as the Virgin (German: Jungfrau – translates to "virgin" or "maiden"), the Monk (Mönch), and the Ogre (Eiger; the standard German word for ogre is Oger). The name has been linked to the Latin term acer, meaning "sharp" or "pointed".
Grindelwald was first mentioned in 1146 as Grindelwalt. This designation is probably derived from the Old High German words "grintil" (bar, barrier) and "walt" (forest), thus describing the nature of the valley. According to a legend, the name Grindelwald comes from two monks of the Interlaken Monastery.

The Matterhorn is the next hardest, as although slightly lower, is a very physical and aerobically demanding climb. Out of the three, the Eiger is the hardest climb technically, despite being the lowest of the Alpine Trilogy, and the exposure on the route is incredible.
1. Annapurna (8,091 meters / 26,545 feet) – Nepal. Annapurna is the deadliest mountain in the world to climb. With a fatality rate of around 32%, Annapurna's sees approximately 32 deaths per 100 successful summits.
The ridge is very exposed and narrow with good sections of steep climbing. The final section to the summit is typically on a snow fin using crampons and an ice axe. Our route down is long and difficult, requiring concentration, and climbers need to maintain lots of energy.
Looking backwards, you can see how high the train is climbing. At first the train is in the open, but soon it plunges into a steeply-climbing tunnel built inside the infamous North Face of the Eiger.
Description. All Alpine mountains are equal but these 3 are slightly more equal than the others - Mont Blanc is the highest peak in the Alps, the Matterhorn is arguably the most recognisable mountain in the World, and the Eiger is home to the most feared face in Europe.
From the Eigerwand station, the tunnel bends towards the South side of the Eiger and reaches the Eismeer station at a height of 3,160 metres. It is used from 25 July 1905 as a temporary final station and is managed accordingly.
However, the only access to the station other than by train is a door in the sheer face of the mountain. This has, on occasion, been used to rescue mountaineers stranded on the mountain, most famously during the 1936 Eiger north face climbing disaster. It features in this capacity in the film The Eiger Sanction.
There are two popular climbing routes that get you to the summit of Eiger as well as two other routes. Most guides will take you up one of the first two routes listed here.
Gangkhar Puensum has been off limits to climbers since 1994 when Bhutan prohibited all mountaineering above 6,000 m (20,000 ft) due to spiritual/religious beliefs.
Over 330 people have died attempting to reach the summit of Mount Everest which, at 8,848.86 m (29,031 ft 81⁄2 in), is Earth's highest mountain and a particularly desirable peak for mountaineers. This makes it the mountain with the most deaths, although it does not have the highest death rate.
Nanga Parbat is notorious for being an extremely difficult climb, and has earned the nickname Killer Mountain for its high number of climber fatalities and pushing climbers to the test of their limits.
The climb and descent is done exclusively over rocks and ice, and it requires outstanding fitness and experience in rock climbing with and without crampons. The normal route is via the Hörnligrat and is only suitable for well-versed mountaineers accompanied by a mountain guide.
All said the Matterhorn is not an exceptionally difficult alpine climb if attempting with a guide (route finding can be tricky if attempting on your own). It just requires excellent physical shape and a skill set that allows you to move fast and efficiently on exposed rock.
Except for the Eagle's Nest, only few “authentic” buildings of the Third Reich are preserved to this day. The Eagle's Nest was not hit during the airstrike on 25th April 1945 and still exists in its original form today.
