Abu the capuchin monkey will also purloin your heart. Abu, orphaned Aladdin's only "parental figure," slaps the thief's hand when he thinks about stealing a forbidden jewel and even recovers the Genie lamp in a key moment.
Abu appears in the live-action remake. Portrayed as a computer-animated Tufted capuchin monkey, he plays a similar role to his animated counterpart as Aladdin's sidekick.

Final Verdict. With everything we have to go off of, Aladdin is set in the 15th century in the Ottoman Empire. With Agrabah seemingly being in a desert, I initially set this movie in 1521 after the conquest of Cairo and the areas of Arabia that bordered the Red Sea.
Not sure if you noticed but the Cave of Wonders swallowed up anyone who wasn't worthy. Jafar KNEW he wouldn't pass the sniff test himself and needed some hapless souls to test run the process until he found someone worthy... the "diamond in the rough" who would be capable of retrieving the lamp and get back out.
