“Madame Web” is the newest film in Sony's Spider-Man Universe that is loosely connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film has only made $25.8 million since its debut and is looking to be a major failure for Sony.
And yet, technically Madame Web is part of the larger Spider-Man cinematic multiverse—which is set to continue with a third Venom movie and a Kraven the Hunter film in Sony's films, another animated Spider-Verse film, and there's talk that Tom Holland might return for a fourth Spider-Man film in the Disney-owned MCU ...
This has resulted in a film not connected to the Avengers or the MCU. Through post-credit turmoil in Venom: Let There Be Carnage, it could be argued that Sony's universe is now part of the MCU multiverse. Then, arguably, Morbius and even Kraven the Hunter may be part of the MCU.
Instead, Sony developed it separately as part of their own Spider-Man universe, as Sony owns the rights to Spider-Man and neighboring characters. Therefore, “Madame Web” takes place in the same extended universe as “Venom” and “Morbius.”
The Madame Web film has no real ties to any other universe, including the one where Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Morbius take place. Likewise, any connection to Tom Holland's Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man or Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man were supposedly removed from the movie.
Madame Web's multiversal nature could have helped the movie take part in the wider Marvel multiverse, but it could have also overcomplicated the concept even further. Madame Web was Sony's best chance to link its franchise to Spider-Man, but the character has lost all credibility now.
Will there be a Madame Web 2? No sequel has been officially greenlit yet, although Dakota Johnson has stated in interviews that she would "definitely" return if she was asked back.
“Madame Web” is set in 2003 and sort of pays homage to the conventions of the comic book movies of that era. The muted color palette and minimalistic special effects are all designed to remind viewers of movies like 2002's “Spider-Man” or 2003's “Daredevil.”

And because Madame Web is distributed by Sony, it's not part of Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe. (After all, you'd think Tony Stark or Steve Rogers would have known if there was a team of Spider-Women protecting New York in the early-aughts.)
