While the Genie is willing to sacrifice his freedom in order to allow Aladdin to be with Princess Jasmine, Aladdin decides to live up to his original promise and uses his final wish to free the Genie from his lamp's power, much to the latter's surprise and happiness.
The three wishes Aladdin "asks" for in the film are to be a prince, be saved from drowning and free the Genie. However, the theory posits that the first two wishes are illegitimate, as the first never comes to pass, and the second didn't get made.
