If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.” Thorin speaks these words in Chapter 18 , just before he dies, asking Bilbo's forgiveness for his harsh words to him before the Battle of the Five Armies.

Thorin apologizes to Bilbo, saying that the world would be a better place if only more folks were like him. He asks for Bilbo's forgiveness. He bids farewell, and dies. Bilbo cries over the loss of Thorin – but is so glad that he made it in time to say goodbye and to make amends before he died.
This contrast also has some thematic importance—Thorin's last words to Bilbo indicate that despite the grandeur of epic heroism, the simple modern values of the hobbits perhaps have a more important place in the world.
Dain Ironfoot is their distant cousin who is next in line for the throne after Thorin, Kili, and Fili. Since Thorin, Kili, and Fili all die at the Battle of the Five Armies, Dain Ironfoot becomes the next King under the Mountain.
Thorin Oakenshield (Thorin II) is a fictional character in J. R. R. Tolkien's 1937 novel The Hobbit. Thorin is the leader of the Company of Dwarves who aim to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from Smaug the dragon.
Thorin became the dwarf king at a very young age after the battle. However, Thorin never married nor had any children. The young dwarf king led his people out of Dunland and they finally re-established their home in the Blue Mountains. His younger sister, Dis, later gave birth to two children, Fíli and Kíli.
Their deaths and Thorin's did not end Durin's line, although did end the branch which had Thror, Thrain, and Thorin Oakenshield. Thorin's cousin, Dain Ironfoot, became King after Thorin's death. Dain's son, Thorin Stonehelm, became King after Dain died in the Battle of Dale. The line continued on after that.
Why did Thorin go crazy? Thorin fell victim to the sickness of greed. Dwarves are known for being greedy and proud, and when he realized the treasure of Erebor was his, including the Arkenstone, he became ill with Dragon Sickness. He began to value his wealth more than his friends, family, and own safety.
Despite victory no Dwarf dared to re-enter Moria out of fear of Durin's Bane. In memory of this, Thorin swore to always bear a plain shield of oak with no device until he should be hailed king, and thus he earned the epithet Oakenshield.
Did Thorin go mad in the book? Yes, he suffered what was called the Dragon-Sickness, which means he became obsessed with treasure (in his case mostly a specific treasure, but also just all of it combined) and paranoid about the intentions of everyone around him.
Dwarves do not have last names. His name was Thorin. His nickname, that identified him from any other Dwarf named Thorin, was Oakenshield, because his shield was made of oak. He was also was introduced as “son of Thrain” because that's the way it was done.

Fíli is a Tolkien character who appears in The Hobbit and one of the sequel novels, Unfinished Tales. He is the older brother of Kíli, son of Dís, and the nephew of Thorin Oakenshield. He is a Prince of Durin's Folk who joins his uncle in reclaiming the Lonely Mountain from the dragon, Smaug.
Gimli is the son of Glóin who is introduced in The Hobbit as a member of Thorin Oakenshield's company, also being one of his four third cousins. Thorin himself is a direct descendant of Durin I, even becoming the King of Durin's Folk in his lifetime.
Thórin Oakenshield was born in TA 2746 and was 195 years old when he perished in the Battle of Five Armies in the book. In the film trilogy, he was born in TA 2837 and was 104 when he was killed by Azog the Defiler.
The townsmen's arrows and spears proved useless against the dragon's armoured body. The thrush told Bard the Bowman of Smaug's one weak spot, a bare patch on the dragon's belly. With his last arrow, Bard killed Smaug by shooting into this place.
The biggest blow to the dwarves is that their king Thorin lies mortally wounded. He forgives Bilbo before dying and lets Bilbo know that he was right all along. Thorin is replaced by Dain as king, Bard rebuilds his town, and Gandalf and Bilbo head for home.
As he lies on his deathbed, Thorin reveals his admiration for Bilbo. The two had previously been at odds, but now, when all else falls away, readers see the fairness in Thorin's heart. The moment adds complexity to Thorin, showing that even though he often appears haughty and stubborn, he harbors a measure of warmth.
Once Thorin gets his hands on Smaug's treasure, he becomes irrationally greedy and obsessed with wealth, to the extent that he would rather wage a violent war than give the men from Lake Town their fair share of the treasure.
