The books center on Thomas, a 16-year-old boy with no memory of life before the Maze, the friends he makes in the Glade, and their struggles to survive a series of deadly tests and overthrow the corporation running them.
The ultimate goal of the Gladers is to find a way out of the Maze. To do so, certain Gladers called "Runners" venture into the Maze every day, to map it in an attempt to find a pattern in the Maze that would lead them to find an exit.
One of the final twists in The Maze Runner's ending is that Ava Paige is not dead after she faked her demise. This is revealed as Paige emerges at the head of a table with other members of WCKD claiming the incredible success of the Maze Trials, even noting her surprise with how many survivors there were.
Thomas tells the Keepers that he and Teresa were manipulated into designing the Maze because they share the gift of telepathy. He convinces the others that he and Teresa are now in as much danger as them, but he knows the way out. Thomas tells them in order to escape, they have to jump through the Griever Hole.
Thomas calls for Newt's help, but realizes Newt won't be able to get to the Door in time to save them. Feeling he must help, Thomas slips into the Maze and the Door closes behind him. In an act of brave self-sacrifice, Thomas enters the Maze to save the others.
Thomas was the last male Glader to enter Group A's Maze, and one of the creators of the Maze alongside Teresa Agnes. He was the main protagonist of the The Maze Runner Series and was named after Thomas Edison. Thomas was one of the creators of the Maze, and formerly one of the Creators mentors.
It is eventually revealed that Thomas' blood contains a unique enzyme that can destroy the Flare virus [2]. In "The Death Cure" film, Teresa, one of the main characters, uses a small fragment of Thomas' blood and observes under a microscope that it snaps a dark-red vein with the virus in it, effectively killing it [2].
It all ends here, in this epic conclusion to the "Maze Runner" saga. Thomas, Newt, and Frypan are the last of the free "Gladers" immune to the Flare virus that has ravaged the world's population.
It just needed to happen, in her mind. No biggie. In book 2, she couldn't stand the thought of Thomas feeling betrayed without warning, so she tries really hard to warn him. And then basically kills their friendship to save his life.
What does the ending of Maze Runner Death Cure mean?
By the time The Death Cure ends, it seems the majority of humanity has descended into the chaotic world seen outside the city walls throughout the entire film franchise. Meanwhile, the Right Arm, Thomas, and the remainder of his friends attempt to build a new society on an island away from the rest of the world.
Gally got through the same way the other Gladers got through. Gally used the small mechanical device that was found in the dead Griever body. We know this because when Gally appears at the end he is holding it.
The Maze is a complex symbol representing both chaos and order. Every night the walls move and shift, making it harder for the Gladers to find an exit. These constant changes along with the apparent impossibility of actually solving the Maze make most of the Gladers see the Maze as a symbol of futility and chaos.
Initially, Thomas and the rest of the teens from the first Maze Runner were seen as potential solutions to the Flare as they were the “Munies”, the rare one percent of human population that are immune to the virus.
Newt gets scratched by one of the Cranks on his right forearm, consequently infecting him with the virus. How does Newt get infected on Maze Runner? So of the guys who were originally in the Glade in the books, most of them were already immune to the Flare.
The disease eats away the minds of the afflicted until they turn into Cranks, zombie-like creatures that roam cities killing people until they're killed themselves. Fortunately for Thomas, he and most of his friends are Munies — immune to the Flare. That's why they've been put through the Maze and the Scorch trials.
The emotional intensity is definitely doubled up in the movie, establishing Teresa as a Thomas' one true love interest. Unlike Dashner's original story, the possibility of him dating Brenda is eliminated, and the audiences also get enough time to process the death of a character introduced right from the first movie.

And you might be wondering "well, why did they leave the maze doors open so the Griever's could come in and kill people?" That was because it was the final phase of the test. At that point, Wicked was OK with letting the grievers kill some people, as they had conclusive test results.
The Maps spell out six repeating words: FLOAT, CATCH, BLEED, DEATH, STIFF, PUSH. To gain more information, Thomas intentionally gets stung by a Griever, goes through the Changing, and realizes in his visions that the only way to escape the Maze is to jump into the Griever Hole and type in the code words.
Gally's hatred of Thomas is ultimately driven by an unwavering commitment to rules and safety, as well as a deep desire to uncover the truth of the Gladers' circumstances.
