Major films shot on digital video overtook those shot on film in 2013. Since 2016 over 90% of major films were shot on digital video. As of 2017, 92% of films are shot on digital. Only 24 major films released in 2018 were shot on 35mm.
The first cameras to use CCD sensors were specialist industry models made by Fairchild in the 1970s. By the 1980s, handheld cameras began to ditch film. This began in 1981 when Sony demonstrated a prototype Mavica (Magnetic Video Camera) model.
Hollywood started to capture films digitally in the 2000s but it wasn't until 2013 that digitally shot films were more common than celluloid productions among the top 100 grossing films.
While most movie theaters are no longer playing movies on film, many filmmakers still choose to shoot their movies on film. They choose this for a number of reasons - mainly for simplicity, efficiency, nostalgia, and the look of it.

What is the difference between a film and a video?
The most basic difference between the physical object of film and the physical object of a video is whether it is light-readable or you need a machine to see what's on it. If you unwind a bit of a reel of film and hold it to a light source, you'll see individual images (called frames).

Since 2003, digital cameras have outsold film cameras. Prices of 35 mm compact cameras have dropped with manufacturers further outsourcing to countries such as China. Kodak announced in January 2004 that they would no longer sell Kodak-branded film cameras in the developed world.
There was no other way to capture images and videos until around 1994, when digital cameras became popularized. Since then, digital photography has dominated our visual literacy and its processes are widely understood, thanks to the iPhone and other modern cameras.
Film photography is enjoying a resurgence, and one clear sign of this is the introduction of new film stocks and the revival of discontinued films by manufacturers.

Shooting on film will give you higher-res images, but that doesn't mean that digital photographs can't—or don't—look good! Digital image resolution from a standard point-and-shoot digital camera is usually somewhere between 12 and 20 megapixels, which will still yield clear, pretty photographs.
