While it may not have turned out to be an LGBTQ+ story, there is always a possibility that Anna is discovering that she is gay during the events in the story. In the end, however, the focus shifted away from any kind of romantic overtones and centered firmly on love in general.
Even the title, When Marnie Was There, suggests an emotional loss occurring because one is no longer there. That unfairness, or abandonment at too young an age, keeps them coupled together across time ( Relationship Story Problem: Inequity ) and draws them ever closer.

Marnie was not informed of her daughter's marriage of the birth of her grandchild, Anna. When Anna was two years old, Emily and her husband were killed in a car accident.
In the midst of this career instability, she moves back in with her mother in New Jersey. Domineering and arguably as self-centred and narcissistic as Hannah, Marnie struggles in her relationships with Charlie and Ray for much of the series, and eventually ends up marrying her musical partner, Desi Harperin.
