Principal photography for Avatar began in April 2007 in Los Angeles and Wellington. Cameron described the film as a hybrid with a full live-action shoot in combination with computer-generated characters and live environments.

The stunning scenery from Avatar can be found in a host of filming locations around the globe. These include China's Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and the spectacular coastline of Hawaii's Big Island.
More specifically, Avatar 2 appears to take place 14 years later.
