Today, Spirit is still alive and well – at the age of 25 – and living on a wild horse reserve that Dreamworks selected following completion of the film. Spirit is one of several wild horse ambassadors at Return to Freedom's American Wild Horse Sanctuary.
In April 2002, after completion of the film, DreamWorks relocated Spirit to Return to Freedom's American Wild Horse Sanctuary, where he serves as a prominent ambassador of the Kiger Mustang breed. At his new home, Spirit is able to spend his days exploring large pastures at the Sanctuary and enjoying new friends.
Spirit eventually falls in love with Rain, despite not understanding her attachment to humans. He and Little Creek gradually come to respect each other; realizing that Spirit is not meant to be domesticated, Little Creek sets him free. Spirit starts back towards his herd, and tries to convince Rain to come with him.
Spirit Isn't Technically A True Story, But It Was Inspired By A Real Horse. Although Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron is not based on a true story, the main character is inspired by a real horse. The horse, whose real name is Donner, was born of two wild horses wrangled in Oregon.

Spirit Jr. is the deuteragonist in the series, Spirit Riding Free and the film, Spirit Untamed. He is the pet of Lucky, the son of the legendary horses, Spirit and Rain and the grandson of Esperanza.
Born to a stallion and mare that had been captured by the BLM in Oregon, Spirit was (and still is) a beautiful example of the Kiger mustang breed. His wide-set eyes and thick, wavy, multi-colored tail and mane became the inspiration for the animated horse that is still stealing hearts all these years later.
Esperanza is a palomino mustang mare with two white stockings on her back legs, and a white blaze on the center of her face. She has a strong, slim build and is muscular, with a beautiful delicate head and curved back…
Esperanza is the overarching protagonist in the film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron and is the mother of the titular character Spirit. She also appears as a primary character in the book Esperanza, where her origins and how she met Spirit's father Strider is revealed.
A beautiful and genlte American Paint Horse mare, Rain is fiercely loyal to her owner, Little Creek. She is very strong-willed and determined to show Spirit the good that surrounds the Lakota Village, but is intrigued by Spirit's strength and conviction and finds herself falling in love with him.
Spirit from the 2002 Dreamworks animated film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron is a buckskin. A single copy of the cream gene does little to alter a black coat; the color is called smoky black, and it is virtually indistinguishable from seal brown or sun-faded black.
Appearance. Strider sported a black coat with no markings. He has dark brown hooves and milky brown eyes, like Spirit and Esperanza. Esperanza describes his coat as shining blue when in the sun.
Rain is a beautiful sorrel tovero paint mare with a slender, well-rounded body and a roman nose. Her eyes are crystal blue and her mane and tail are pale blonde. Her hooves are light brown. She also had an eagle feather in her mane until Little Creek removed it at the end of the movie as a sign of letting her go.
1. Thoroughbred. The distinguished breed known for running in iconic races like the Kentucky Derby (G1) and the Breeders' Cup (G1), Thoroughbreds originated in England and can be traced back to three foundation sires: the Darley Arabian, Godolphin Arabian, and the Byerly Turk.
Before they could be killed as well, four Ojibwe men took them from the island in Lac La Croix across the border to Minnesota. There, they were bred with Spanish Mustang, the start of a careful repopulating that has revived the spirit horses' numbers to around 180.
Spirit the horse is a buckskin or dun. He has a yellow-tan coat with black mane and tail, and black lower legs. He has a dorsal stripe on his back and tiger stripes on his legs. This is a color combination often found in Spanish Mustangs.
Buckskins coloring is a hair coat color referring to a color that resembles certain shades of tanned deerskin. Similar colors in some breeds of dogs are also called buckskin. The horse has a tan or gold colored coat with black points (mane, tail, and lower legs).
If you've ever passed by a field of horses at night, you've probably noticed that they rarely lie down to sleep. So why do these mammals sleep standing up? The answer is one of survival: Horses slumber while standing to balance their need for sleep against the ever-looming threat of predators.
In fact, they are actually very competent swimmers, due to their huge lungs, which enables them to naturally float. Horses have a natural instinct to swim when they hit deep water and readily perform a paddle like action, not too dis-similar from a trotting action.
The takhi is the only true wild horse left in the world. The so-called “wild” horses that abound in Australia and North America are actually feral. A domestic animal becomes "feral" simply by fending for itself when left in the wild, without being helped or managed by humans in any way.
