The reality/documentary follows Cody Maverick, a teenage Royal Penguin, and his friend Chicken Joe, as Cody leaves his hometown of Shiverpool, Antarctica, to participate in "Big Z Memorial Surf Off" competition commemorating deceased surfing star Big Z on Pen Gu Island.
Goodbye Antarctica, hello Pen Gu, an idyllic Hawaii-like paradise that serves as a magnet for monstrous waves and the world's best surfers. Cody soon befriends Chicken Joe, who is an unlikely “waterfowl” boarder from Sheboygan, Wis., and a pretty lifeguard named Lani Aliikai.
The film follows Cody as he enters his first professional surf competition. Inspired by the legendary wave rider Big Z, Cody leaves his family and hometown of Shiverpool, Antarctica to travel to Pen Gu Island for the Big Z Memorial Surf Contest.

Realizing that he couldn't complete with Tank and was tired to be a surfer, Big Z faked his death and became a chamán of the Pen Gu Island named Geek. The Big Z Memorial Surf Off was created in his honor, which was won by Tank nine times in a row.
For reasons unknown, Z is not seen or mentioned in the film's 2017 sequel Surf's Up 2: Wavemania. Cody never noticed that Geek's tattoos (or birthmarks) are identical to Big Z's.
The character of Z in the animated movie Surf's Up is loosely based on Eddie's life and mysterious death. On May 4, 2019, what would have been his 73rd birthday, he was honored with a Google Doodle.
