I weighed 185–190 at the time, and got down to 165 for the role in Broken City, so I had to start from a place that's below my normal body weight. But I was still able to get up to 212 for Pain & Gain.
What happened to the real guys from Pain and Gain?
In real life, the third key member of the gang was Jorge Delgado (about whom more below). Like Doyle in the movie, Delgado testified against Doorbal and Lugo and received a 15-year sentence. (Lugo and Doorbal got the death penalty.)

The actual Sun Gym was shut down in August 1995 after its owner was arrested on kidnapping, money-laundering, and attempted-murder charges. At that location now is a warehouse for Oni Essence perfume. So, the filmmakers took over an empty 40,000-square-foot building in the 8000 block of Biscayne Blvd.
Bizarrely, it was almost all true. The real-life Lugo, along with other employees and members of the Sun Gym had been involved in various low-level schemes before, but in 1994, they had set their sights on something much bigger.
"Mark Schiller was the perfect victim because he was involved in something that was illegal," said Levine. "I think he got greedy and started to get involved in Medicare fraud," said Jimenez. Danny Lugo learned about Schiller from Jorge Delgado, who also worked out at Sun Gym. Schiller and Delgado had been in business.
For example, Noel Doorbal was sentenced to death for crimes that occurred in 1995. The judge imposed sentences of death after the jury voted 8-4 for death on two counts of first-degree murder.
