This is an extremely scary, graphic horror movie that should not be taken lightly. I have seen my fair share of horror movies over the years but this one definitely has a different feel to it. It is chilling, unnerving, and very difficult to watch sometimes.

But I couldn't help but notice that the flick takes a certain amount of inspiration from Ringu/The Ring. At its core, the lore behind Smile is quite similar to The Ring. Both films follow a protagonist exposed to a supernatural entity that they eventually learn will kill them within a week.
Northcott (Robin Weigert) reveals herself to be the demon. Her own therapist attacks her and shatters the sacred trust between doctor and patient — it's a shocking moment that represents the ultimate betrayal.
Smile handled it decently but don't expect Oscar worthy exposition. And no, it wasn't exactly the main theme so try not to quit halfway through because there would be surprises by the last act of the film. Give it a go. I'd say it was well worth the time for horror fans like myself.
The entity in Smile is able to shapeshift and become any person that it wants to. This is why, throughout the movie, Rose keeps seeing different people with creepy, horrifying grins on their faces. Since there are so many scary smiles in horror movies, the Smile demon's true form is effective.
As it turns out, Rose is cursed by trauma, which in Smile is represented by a shapeshifting apparition that scares its victims until their minds are shattered.
Those closest to Rose believe she's lost her mind and that her hallucinations are a symptom of some undiagnosed mental illness. (Rose's mom, we learn, took her own life when she was just a kid, and she has not yet processed it fully.)
Ok so the movie Smile is based around a curse/entity that feeds and spreads through trauma. The main character Rose gets the Trauma both from her mother's death when she is young and also seeing her patient who had the Trauma die violently.
Shortly after, she has trouble finding her cat, Mustache, and its tragic fate is revealed during her nephew's birthday party. The boy opens Rose's present to discover her cat's dead body. Rose's boyfriend later asks her if she killed it, and while she swears she didn't, the movie leaves the culprit a mystery.
I would say it's a mixture of poor ideas (most of them already seen in other movies with a much better production), stupid dialogs and situations, even poorer "special effects" (if there are any...) and silly acting (sometimes I have the feeling the actors don't believe that much in what they are doing).
Smile also misses the mark metaphorically because the audience is aware that the smiling creature following Rose is real. This means that Rose is not having a genuine psychotic episode but that her would-be delusions are actually factual beliefs, which creates many problems in the film.
