There's an uneasiness and profound sense of fear that washes over young Beth in that opening scene. She's stiff, both hands holding a tight grip on the reins while riding horses next to her mother, Evelyn (Gretchen Mol), and younger brother, Kayce (Rhys Alterman), on the famed Montana ranch.
A flashback to 1997 shows Evelyn went riding with two of her children, Beth and Kayce. During a moment of Beth's hesitation, Evelyn fell from her horse. Her horse fell onto her and crushed her. Though she did not succumb immediately, Evelyn died within a few hours.

As Beth keeps reminding viewers, she has been perpetually angry at Jamie for how Jamie inadvertently made her sterile by helping her get an abortion when they were both teenagers.

Infuriated, Garrett murdered his wife in order to save his child from the life he was living. He spent more than 3 decades in prison for the murder and Jamie was adopted by John and Evelyn Dutton.

While the flashbacks to Evelyn's life are few and far between, one dynamic is super clear: She had a special bond with her youngest, Kayce. "I still think Kayce is John's favorite. He's the youngest of the family, and he's Evelyn's favorite.
As Yellowstone fans will remember, Beth fell pregnant as a teen and needed an abortion. Her brother Jamie (Wes Bentley) took her to a fertility clinic on the nearby reservation for a termination.
