The movie was banned in Sweden due to excessive horror. The ban was finally lifted in 1972. All known prints and negatives were destroyed under the terms of settlement of a lawsuit by Bram Stoker's widow.
That person was Florence Stoker, whose late husband Bram Stoker was the author of Dracula. And Nosferatu had “Dracula” written all over it. Because the 1897 novel was still under copyright, Prana Film couldn't legally adapt it for the screen without permission from Florence, who was her husband's literary executor.

Did Nosferatu rip off Dracula?
Nosferatu, released in 1922 and directed by F.W. Murnau, is a silent film following an animalistic vampire preying on innocent victims. The story is clearly adapted from Bram Stoker's Dracula—the monster in need of human blood must be defeated by an unsuspecting visitor to his castle—but with key differences.
In 1476, while marching to yet another battle with the Ottomans, Vlad and a small vanguard of soldiers were ambushed, and Vlad was killed and beheaded — by most reports, his head was delivered to Mehmed II in Constantinople as a trophy to be displayed above the city's gates.
Harker escapes the castle after discovering that Dracula is a vampire, and the Count moves to England and plagues the seaside town of Whitby. A small group, led by Abraham Van Helsing, investigate, hunt and kill Dracula.
In the beginning, for at least the first third of the book Harker decidedly is the protagonist. Then, it seems to switch to Mina, and Lucy. Mina does keep him on the back burner, as we are continually aware that he is trapped at Castle Dracula and wonder when (and how) he will return.
This BBC miniseries starring French actor Louis Jourdan is so faithful to the 19th century novel, many have found it unwatchably slow and dry. One of the changes it makes is that Lucy and Mina are not friends but sisters.
Perhaps the most central theme in "Dracula" is the battle between good and evil. Count Dracula represents pure evil, while characters like Van Helsing and Jonathan Harker embody goodness and virtue. The novel pits these forces against each other in a struggle for dominance.
In Stoker's novel, sunlight weakens vampires, but that doesn't stop the title villain from walking around during the day. Nosferatu's fiery demise was added by the filmmakers to make the climax more visually interesting.
The character of Dracula created by Bram Stoker is under public domain. However, specific adaptations of Dracula, such as the Universal version or the Castlevania version, are owned by the people who created him.
The novel ends with a final battle in which the men seize Count Dracula's coffin. Harker cuts Dracula's head off while Morris stabs him in the heart. Dracula's body crumbles into dust, signaling that he is finally defeated, and that Mina is no longer in danger.
It reads: "Please do not ask staff where Dracula's grave as there isn't one.” Stoker's novel is partially set in the North Yorkshire town after Dracula ends up there on theback of a ship that gets into trouble in Whitby Bay. Vlad the Impaler was also known as Vlad III Dracula. The name Dracula means “son of Dracul.” In the Romanian language today, dracul means “the devil”—drac is “devil,” ul is “the”—but it is derived from the Latin dracō, “dragon.” (Dragons have been historically associated with Satan, hence the evolution.)
