It's assumed Cole laid down his life and fired up the RFI as the good ending is the canon ending for Infamous 2. The RFI killed a bunch of Conduits around the world including the beast, but not all of them. The Beast came thru and augmented several cities before he got to New Marais.
Good Karma has been used as the canon choice for the series, as a majority of players went through the positive route, which developers used to decide which path to use as the canonical choice.
You don't need to for Second Son. Different protagonist and the story takes place 7 years after the end of inFamous 2. If you play the previous games then you'll probably appreciate Second Son more but really not a requirement.

Second Son takes place in 2018, seven years after Infamous 2's Conduit protagonist Cole MacGrath sacrifices himself to cure humanity of a plague and destroy the Beast.
At the end of InFamous 2, fans are given the choice to either side with the Beast or go against him and fight for humanity. If Cole picks the good ending, he will fight the Beast, fix the RFI, and use it to kill everyone with the conduit gene.
Nate Fox said they had originally planned to use the evil ending but when they went and checked everyone's trophy data, a LOT more people had taken the hero's ending, They were intrigued and a little disappointed but decided to make the hero ending canon instead and work from there.
During this now-canonical ending, Cole defeats a powerful, destruction-crazed Conduit known as the Beast and then sets off a genetic bomb called the Ray Field Inhibitor (RFI), which not only kills Cole but destroys all the Conduit genes around the world, thereby ridding the world of the Conduit “plague.”
Ultimately, the choice boils down to the player's preferred playstyle and chosen route, as it will not affect the story outside potentially changing the ending and some small pieces of dialog if Delsin keeps picking good or evil options often enough.

Is it better to be good or bad in Infamous: Second Son?
Play Good karma first, evil is much easier. I went through the game faster as evil even though I did it on plat. The story is also slightly different, mostly just the ending and a few scenarios... I personally prefer good.
Infamous Second Son is the third game in the series, released in March 2014. Set seven years after the events of Infamous 2, the game introduces a new character, Delsin Rowe, a graffiti artist who absorbs the power from other prime conduits.
What happens if you sacrifice the tribe in inFamous Second Son?
After interrogating Delsin, you are given your first choice of the game. You could either sell out the tribe to save your own skin or sacrifice yourself and turn yourself in. Either way, Augustine still injures the rest of the tribe populace.
Cole dies in the good ending. We see his body loaded into a coffin and Zeke takes it out to sea. But as the boat drifts off into the horizon and the screen starts to black out a bolt of lightning seemingly and ominously strikes the boat.
In terms of power and skill, Cole had Delsin outmatched. Throughout his career, Cole's fought Conduits who are several times stronger than himself, such as Alden Tate, a powerful telekenetic who created a monster created from the surrounding metal from the destroyed bridge they were on.
Cole's appearance in Infamous 2 doesn't deviate much from his design in the first Infamous; he still retains his chiseled face and bald head, but his clothing has changed so that he can adapt to the humid weather of the New Orleans-inspired city.
He also bears a resemblance to some of Cole's conceptual artwork from InFamous 2. Shortly after his first appearance, there was wide speculation on whether or not Delsin was Cole's brother or son. These rumors were later ruled out. He is the first inFamous character to have his age confirmed, as 24.
In this Karma State, Delsin is a ruthless and selfish man. He only cares about how his powers benefit him and other conduits. After killing Betty and presumably everybody in the longhouse he shows very little remorse for his actions. He has no sense of morality and will kill those in his way of absorbing more powers.
“Infamous: Second Son” is the best superhero or supervillain game ever made. The beauty of this PlayStation 4 exclusive is that you can choose the good or evil side for your character and change the way the world treats you.
Good ending is best... Leaves it up to if he we be fighting the Military next game or will he be fighting Evil conduits. The same could be done for the Evil ending. Personally the Evil Ending made no sense to me.
Battles are accompanied by realistic gunfire, cries of pain, and spurts of blood. Players have the ability to attack random civilians, though the activity is not encouraged. During some action-cutscene sequences, players can choose to spare or kill a character (choking a man with a chain).
