On a school trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Percy is attacked by Alecto, a Fury masquerading as his substitute English teacher Mrs. Dodds, who demands the bolt. Percy's best friend Grover Underwood and his Latin teacher Mr. Brunner help scare off Alecto.
Grover tells Percy that monstrous forces are now after him in earnest, and they have no choice but to flee to Camp Half Blood. On the way to camp, they are attacked by the Minotaur.
As Percy is preparing to leave the observation deck of the Gateway Arch, he is attacked by Echidna, the Mother of Monsters, and a chimera. The chimera succeeds in disarming Percy and poisoning Percy with a bite to the calf.
Because Percy is suspected of having stolen Hades's Helm of Darkness, the three Furies have been tasked with finding him. Mrs. Dodds attacks Percy because she believes that he is the one responsible for having taken her master's Helm of Darkness. Her ultimate goal is to kill him.
