The quote has become an easy target for pedants to point out that a 'parsec' is a unit of distance, not time (it's an abbreviation of 'parallax arcsecond', used to measure the distance to faraway astronomical objects), and so Han's statement seems to make as much sense as saying you did the 100-metre dash in 60 metres.
In the original version of this scene, Han shoots Greedo dead. Later versions are edited so that Greedo attempts to fire at Han first. Director George Lucas altered the scene to give Solo more justification for acting in self-defense.
Han Solo's death in The Force Awakens (2015) came about when writer/director J. J. Abrams felt the character was not evolving or contributing to the story's development; he believed that Kylo Ren killing his own father would give him a chance to develop into a worthy successor for Darth Vader.
