At the same time, the Chancellor revealed that he himself was a Sith Lord, Darth Sidious, and would train Anakin. Confused and conflicted, Anakin ultimately succumbed to Sidious' temptations. Rechristened as Darth Vader, he became an agent of evil.
Darth Sidious is the main reason he ended up becoming Darth Vader. Sidious groomed him since he joined the Jedi Order, and became sort of a father figure to him as Anakin never really had a father, to begin with and so he craved that which Sidious of course knew.
Darth Vader began life as Anakin Skywalker. He and his mother Shmi were slaves owned by the junk dealer Watto on Tatooine. The Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn orchestrated Anakin's liberation, hoping to train him as a Jedi.
Refusing to watch his son die, Vader—who still had good within him—threw his Master down a reactor shaft. This act redeemed Vader from the dark side of the Force, and he once again became Anakin Skywalker.
In the main Star Wars timeline, of course, Darth Vader's attempts to resurrect Padmé on Mustafar were doomed to failure. Why does Darth Vader save Luke?
Vader's redemption in Return of the Jedi was not just about saving his son; it was also a defiance of the dark side's corruption and his own past as a Sith Lord. Vader's decision to block Luke from killing Palpatine was motivated by his knowledge that it would corrupt Luke and lead him down a similar path of suffering.
Palpatine, motivated by pride and a desire to see his homeworld become a part of the greater galaxy, sought to quietly undermine his father's political agenda during the 65 BBY election season. More importantly, however, it was the rift with his father that indirectly led to his future as a Sith.
According to series creator George Lucas, the power loss resulting from Anakin's injuries is what drove Palpatine to decide to replace his apprentice with Luke. "Anakin, as Skywalker, as a human being, was going to be extremely powerful,"Lucas explained in 2005.
Since the bounty hunters failed, Palpatine thought Luke Skywalker might be capable and willing to kill Vader. Granted, Palpatine told Vader that he wanted Luke to join them as a dark side ally. But in actuality, he wanted Luke to take Vader's place.

Transference. Sidious used Plagueis' methods to transfer his consciousness to a new body after his first demise. During the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, Sidious was killed by a redeemed Anakin Skywalker, who turned back to the light side of the Force and threw Sidious down a reactor shaft to save his son Luke Skywalker.
Vader eventually kills Palpatine because his love for his son, Luke, trumps his hatred for his master, allowing him to look past Palpatine and prioritize something more important.
Rumor had it that his mother was Palpatine's Umbaran aide Sly Moore, who had impregnated herself using DNA from an undisclosed source. Regardless of the veracity of that report, Triclops was regarded as the true son of Palpatine, both by himself and the few high-ranking officials who were aware of his existence.
Since Anakin's defeat on Mustafar, he needed frequent visits to his bacta tank to survive, and even the Vader suit itself was crude enough for Palpatine to control him. So with an aged body, a mind out of balance and the surprise of Luke's attack, Vader was caught at his weakest point.
Darth Vader didn't learn he had a daughter until Return of the Jedi, when he stood before Emperor Palpatine. The Emperor's power probed Luke's mind, attempting to goad him to fall to the dark side, and he discovered Leia's existence. "Sister," the Emperor taunted.
The pain inflicted on his son awakened the part of Vader that was still Anakin, resulting in a redeemed Skywalker killing Sidious at the cost of his own life. Having destroyed the Sith and fulfilled his destiny as the Chosen One, Skywalker made peace with his son and became one with the Force.
