He's had several owners over the course of the movies. He is initially property of Naboo - an emergency repair droid on the queen's ship. The R2 appears to become Padme's property although Anakin seems to have a “personal” connection with him.
They aren't abbreviations — they're model and serial numbers. R2 is a second generation R-series astromech, serial number D2. * And C-3PO is a C-series protocol droid with the serial number 3PO. *And likely several more numbers that get dropped for the sake of time.
The name derives from when Lucas was making one of his earlier films, American Graffiti. Sound editor Walter Murch states that he is responsible for the utterance which sparked the name for the droid. Murch asked for Reel 2, Dialog Track 2, in the abbreviated form "R-2-D-2".
Programmed for etiquette and protocol, Threepio was built by a young Anakin Skywalker, and has been a constant companion to astromech R2-D2. Over the years, he was involved in some of the galaxy's most defining moments and thrilling battles.

In addition to that, Anakin's fall was surely a painful event in R2-D2's life, one that he definitely wouldn't like to remember or even talk about.
But Anakin remained staunchly against this idea for R2-D2, meaning the droid never had to worry about losing the memories of his past. As a result, R2-D2 could learn the value of intelligence, quick thinking and when and where not to speak up.
After the Clone Wars, however, Brooks Propulsion Devices, the company responsible for the development of his boosters, was shut down, and his rocket boosters were eventually damaged and thus could not be repaired. Despite this, however, R2 hardly regretted the loss of his ability to fly.
He didn't. Vader hit R2-D2, but that was not what he was aiming at. He was trying to shoot the X-Wing itself. In any case, he couldn't have possibly known that that particular X-Wing was carrying his old astromech droid.
The question being answered is: “Do R2D2 and C3PO know that Darth Vader is Anakin?” C-3PO? Definitely not. As many other have pointed out, C-3PO had his memory wiped at the end of Episode III, so it is almost certain that he does not know.
Starting with Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, Obi-Wan and R2-D2 helped free Naboo from the Trade Federation's invasion. Later, both served in the Clone Wars with R2-D2 assigned to Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker. Since Obi-Wan and Anakin often fought together, Obi-Wan was friends with R2-D2 as well.
Instead, the diminutive droid appears to have kept his own counsel, perhaps wary of interfering too much in Luke's personal journey. C-3PO lost those memories, but he remained with Han and Leia's family after Return of the Jedi, so can reasonably be assumed to have learned the truth by eavesdropping.

C3PO was clearly created from some sort of kit or existing prototype since every protocol droid aside from coloring looks the same. He didn't recognize him because again, they all look the same & it was decades until he saw him again. There was no reason to believe he or R2 even existed anymore.

Internally BB-8 was originally called "Ball-Bot". JJ Abrams previous explained why he named the droid BB-8: "I named him BB-8 because it was almost onomatopoeia. It was sort of how he looked to me, with the 8, obviously, and then the 2 B's."
A New Hope's marketing material pegged Chewbacca's age at 200, which was confirmed in Solo: A Star Wars Story (at which point in the story he was 190). It also beggars the question of how long Wookiees as a whole are expected to live. There's a canon answer, though it's buried fairly deeply.
