Dally's death forces readers to take another serious look at themes that are vital to understanding the novel. One important theme is the evolution of family relationships. In this chapter, Pony is concerned that he may have only called for Soda, not for Darry, while he was sick and barely conscious.
Ponyboy studies the boys from the other greaser gangs, and realizes that these boys are all "future convicts," and that his own brothers and friends are not. He looks over at Darry, and knows that Darry will work his way out of the street life. Ponyboy vows to do the same.

As a result of frustration and fear for Pony's safety, Darry had slapped him when he returned home well after curfew. This slap did make Pony run away, thus in Ponyboy's mind starting this whole nightmare: "I bet Darry's sorry he ever hit me."
Ponyboy says, “Darry was too smart to be a greaser.” (Hinton 126) Darry is not like the other greasers, he was a strong athlete and did fine in school. Darry would of probably went to college if it was not for the passing of his parents. He gave up a lot, but he knew he had to watch out for his brothers.
Newspaper Article. TULSA, Oklahoma Last night two greasers, Ponyboy Curtis and Johnny Cade, killed Soc, Robert Sheldon, by stabbing him with a six-inch pocketknife. Witnesses said that there were punches thrown before the stabbing happened when Ponyboy Curtis was being drowned in the fountain by an unidentified Soc.
All of the other Socs then ran away. Johnny killed Bob out of self defense. He knew that another beating was coming, and he killed Bob before it started. Johnny also killed Bob to protect Ponyboy.
