Bucky accompanies Captain America on missions as an Army press photographer rather than as a costumed sidekick. After Captain America's seeming death and the end of World War II, Bucky befriends Gail Richards. The two eventually marry and have a large family.
While under control of the Russians, Barnes meets and begins falling in love with Natasha Romanoff, who goes onto become the Black Widow. He reunites with her after regaining his senses in the modern era.

Why does Steve love Bucky so much?
Bucky is the closest thing Steve has to family even before he falls out of the 1940s and ends up in modern day America. He's far more than just a surrogate brother—he's Steve's last piece of home. In a very real sense, Bucky is home.
Bucky ended up at the Red Room, an assassin training facility, where he participated in the Black Widow Ops program as a trainer—and that's where he met Romanoff for the first time. The two soon started having an affair.
