Cliegg Lars was a Human male who was the widower of Shmi Skywalker, the step-grandfather of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa, the stepfather of Anakin Skywalker, and the father of Owen Lars. He was the son of Gredda and Lef Lars, and was the elder brother of Edern Lars.
Owen Lars was a young adult when his father Cliegg married Shmi Skywalker, a Mos Espa slave he'd purchased and then freed. After Tusken Raiders kidnapped Owen's stepmother, a Jedi Padawan arrived in search of Shmi. This was Shmi's son Anakin, the stepbrother Owen had wondered if he'd ever meet.
Anakin Skywalker's birth mystery is solved - his mother, Shmi Skywalker, reveals that there was no father and she can't explain what happened. Qui-Gon Jinn believed that the Force itself created Anakin in Shmi's womb, making him the Chosen One who would bring balance to the Force.
Meanwhile, Lars' father was determined to continue the life he worked hard to create, but the tragedy weakened Cliegg, and he died soon after of a broken heart, leaving his farm and traditions to Lars. Soon after, Lars and Whitesun married, and together they toiled to maintain the farm.

Did Lars know Anakin was Vader?
Though it sounds like he thinks Anakin is dead, he could also be viewing it as Obi-Wan does, where he believes Anakin died when Darth Vader was created. There's a hint that Owen knows Anakin was Darth Vader by the time of A New Hope.

Admittedly, Rey skills couldn't possibly be as developed as Anakin's or Luke's. Nevertheless, considering how fast of a learner she is, and how unique the powers she possesses are, it's not a stretch to say that Rey could be a more powerful Jedi than Anakin and Luke Skywalker.

R2-D2 was present when Padmé gave birth to Leia and Luke, so he knew Luke was Anakin's son – but what he didn't know was that Anakin became Darth Vader. In addition to that, Anakin's fall was surely a painful event in R2-D2's life, one that he definitely wouldn't like to remember or even talk about.
Despite seeing Vader as an idol, Kylo conveniently ignored his grandfather's redemption. He was well aware of what happened, and it's likely Luke himself who told Ben about the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.
