Fawkes was a highly intelligent male phoenix and Albus Dumbledore's animal companion and defender. Fawkes had been in Dumbledore's service for 59 years up to the Headmaster's death in 1997. Fawkes was instrumental in helping Harry Potter defeat Salazar Slytherin's Basilisk in 1993.
Dumbledore's Patronus was a phoenix, which was revealed to us when he wanted to summon Hagrid after Viktor Krum was Stunned. It can be no surprise that Dumbledore had an affinity with this particular creature, given that his own animal companion was an enigmatic and loyal phoenix, Fawkes.
Dumbledore cared for Fawkes after each of his rebirths, and in return he was very faithful to the elderly wizard. Fawkes protected Dumbledore in his duel with Lord Voldemort by swallowing a Killing Curse aimed at him, and teleported Dumbledore away from the school when the Ministry attempted to arrest him in 1996.
After Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore: Movie Magic was released, it was confirmed in the book that Credence's phoenix was indeed not Fawkes.
Dumbledore knew a lot about magic, including dark magic, enough to know not to use it, especially for such a purpose as to preserve your soul or get rid of a part of it due to guilt. In the end, Harry Potter fans will believe whatever they want, but Fawkes was definitely not Dumbledore's horcrux.

Why didn't Fawkes save Dumbledore?
The fact that Fawkes, who sacrificed to save Dumbledore's life at the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, didn't come to his aid at the Battle of the Astronomy Tower hints to the true nature of the headmaster's death, meaning Fawkes may understand he was killed by his own orders.
Once Dumbledore is killed by Snape during the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, Fawkes decides he no longer has any reason to remain at Hogwarts. With his master dead, Fawkes flew off into the distance, never to return to Hogwarts or the story.
It's likely Fawkes didn't enter Dumbledore's life until after the events of Fantastic Beasts 3. What's more, the book Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore: Movie Magic confirms Fawkes is not Credence's phoenix at all.
The wand, like many other things in the film, was meant to insinuate that Modesty was the Obscurus child, the better to conceal who it really was - Credence Barebone.
Grindelwald had claimed the phoenix's presence around Credence proved he was a Dumbledore, but it seems he was telling a half-truth, because in reality the phoenix kept returning to Credence because they are drawn to provide strength and comfort for those who are dying.
Because once Dumbledore died, Fawkes left the castle. Dumbledore was the only thing tying him there essentially, so without him he was free to go. That's why he didn't come back to save Snape.

Dumbledore explains to Harry in book 4 that since both wands contained a tail feather from Fawkes the phoenix, the couldn't face each other as they'd refuse to destroy each other pretty much. It is assumed that Ollivander explained something similar to Voldemort when he offered the suggestion of using a different wand.
