Joaquim de Almeida plays Javier Ramos, a Colombian local who June hires to help her solve the case. Javier becomes almost like a father figure to June, as she reminds him of his estranged son.

The movie opens with archival video footage of 10-year-old June (Storm Reid) with her now-deceased father James. We learn that he died from a brain tumor shortly after the video was taken.
Despite its lifelike premise and innovative use of modern technologies in its storytelling, Missing is not based on a true story. The film and its plot are completely fictional works that were conceptualized and written by Sev Ohanian and Aneesh Chaganty.
However, when he unwittingly reveals he was in the same prison around the same time Kevin was incarcerated, June realizes James and Kevin planned the entire ruse. It is revealed that James was a drug addict whose abuse endangered his family; Grace and Heather had told June he died of cancer in order to protect her.
Now, Grace and June are free and reunited. The film ends with June in college, and we learn that a true crime show has been written based on what happened to her and Grace.
Missing has a very happy ending in which Sarah and June make it back alive after going through hell in the form of James coming back from the past to harm them somehow. June's attitude is much more mature, and her connection with her mother seems to be more solid than ever.

Season 2 of The Missing is connected to Season 1 in two ways, but they're slight enough so as not to deter new viewers. One, it features the same detective, Julian Baptiste (Tchéky Karyo), and in the second instance, it acts as a narrative inversion of that first season's story.
Missing is no horror film, but it is a very well crafted thriller. The performances are spectacular. The grounded reality of the film makes it feel like you are watching these terrifying events play out in real time. There's a large debate between thriller and horror films, but it doesn't matter.
Foreshadowing: Several points: Kevin mentions early on that he fixed June's laptop recently. He actually installed spyware that lets James spy on her. June never sees her mother's face in all of the photos that Kevin sends her, just her from behind or slightly out of view.

While FaceTime, Ring and the iPhone were just some tech storytelling devices in the film, co-directors Johnson and Merrick didn't actually shoot on iPhones. Says Merrick, “We built more advanced rigs that could simulate what that [footage] would look like. We could go as deep in the depth of field as we needed to.”
Missing, the spiritual sequel to Searching, involves an entirely new story and — save for a sly reference to John Cho's character in the prologue — an entirely new cast, but it retains the cinematic grammar and philosophy of the original film.
