Is R5 in The Mandalorian the same as in A New Hope?
This was done through the inclusion of a droid character that was first seen in 1977's A New Hope: R5-D4. R5 was the astromech droid that Owen Lars initially intended to purchase from the Jawas before a faulty motivator led R2-D2 and C-3PO to fall into Luke Skywalker's care.
R5 was still active by the time of the New Republic Era, and eventually came into the service of Mos Eisley hangar manager Peli Motto. He was later sold to the Mandalorian Din Djarin for his mission to the Living Waters of Mandalore.
During the Clone Wars, members of the R5-series were used by the Republic for a variety of roles, including use aboard starfighters like the ARC-170 and capital ships like the Acclamator-class assault ship.

Designated as CT-99s, Clone Force 99 was named in remembrance of 99, a malformed maintenance duty clone who died while aiding the defense of Kamino from the Separatist invasion during the Clone Wars.
99 was a disabled clone of the Mandalorian bounty hunter Jango Fett who served the cloning facilities and performed janitorial duties at Tipoca City on the planet Kamino during the Clone Wars. He died during the Battle of Kamino in 21 BBY.

On the sandcrawler, R2-D2 sabotaged his motivator, ensuring he would then replace the unfortunate droid and continue his mission. It didn't all end badly though, as R5-D4 escaped the stormtrooper attack on the sandcrawler and joined the Rebel Alliance.
Sound editor Walter Murch states that he is responsible for the utterance which sparked the name for the droid. Murch asked for Reel 2, Dialog Track 2, in the abbreviated form "R-2-D-2".
