Dani's sister Terri (Klaudia Csányi) loses her ongoing battle with her mental health and decides to take her own life, filling the Ardor home with carbon monoxide. This doesn't only result in the death of Terri, but her and Dani's parents too.
In the middle of winter, an American student, Dani, is traumatized after her mentally ill sister Terri kills their parents and herself via carbon monoxide poisoning. This puts a strain on Dani's relationship with her increasingly distant boyfriend, Christian.
While Dani deals with a possible breakup with Christian, she learns that her sister committed a murder-suicide by filling their parents' house with carbon monoxide, killing herself and their parents.
He has a brother named Ingemar and a sister named Dagny, though it is left unclear if they are blood-related. However him and Dagny share the same birthday so it's possible they are non-identical twins.
Josh later learns that the village's ritualistic practices are based on paintings made by a member named Ruben (Levente Puczko-Smith), a deformed boy who was the product of incest but is viewed as some kind of seer. Josh asks to take pictures of Ruben's drawings, but he is forbidden.
While Ulf's motivation for flaying Mark's skin is revenge, and ultimately, ritual sacrifice, it is interesting to note that the Fehu ᚠ rune can be seen on a mural with Mark standing next to it, which also corresponds to wealth and new beginnings.
It is alluded that Pelle and Dani are destined to be together based on the fact that they are an astrological match. Not only is she the ideal person to become the Harga's queen, she is also the ideal mate for Pelle.
A theory posted on Reddit explains that Pelle's crowning at the end of the film, along with the elder's speech, point at him becoming the new oracle – which would also mean that he's one of the inbred people in the commune.

Connie Was Drowned As A Tribute To The Element Of Water
As she's wheeled into the building, her body is blue, wet, and covered in seaweed. It is obvious that Connie was drowned by the Hårga members and left in the water until they needed to use her for the appropriate ritual.
It's heavily implied that Pelle's own parents were sacrificed in their own time, as Pelle tells Dani that they burned in a fire when he was a child. However, having brought the May Queen to Hårga, Pelle is spared from being sacrificed and instead given the highest honors.
There's no sympathy here, of course, with Dani's reaction to Christian's death being a big grin. She has reached catharsis by confronting her fear of loss, finding a new family to help her through the aftermath.
Simon and Connie decide to leave, however several cultists find Simon and torture him. They then take out his lungs and use them to turn Simon into a blood eagle. They stuff flowers into Simon's eyes as well and leave him in the chicken shack.
A potentially traumatic event death of Dani's parents and sister drastically transforms Dani, leaving her psychologically traumatized. Later on, Dani develops posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), an anxiety disorder caused by this distressing event.
(Mark wanders off with a girl with whom he has not been approved to mate; Josh sneaks back into the Oracle's house to read from the sacred book of runes, and is killed by the Oracle, now wearing Mark's face.
Ultimately, Dani becomes the May Queen she was always destined to become and sacrifices Christian to complete the mid-summer ritual. The most unexpected element in the film is not his death nor is it her being crowned the May Queen, it is actually how many times Aster overtly foreshadowed these events.
Once she saw Christian having sex with another woman in the Hårga cult's fertility ritual, Dani's sanity finally slipped away. That betrayal drove her to that state of disorientation on display as Christian meets his fiery end.
Dani has just seen her boyfriend (Jack Reynor) having sex with another woman from the commune, and it causes all her pent-up rage and grief to come pouring out of her. The other women reflect her emotions back at her by screaming and crying as well.
Midsommar's young women are practicing a sort of “Dani Pose” in their communal grief. By fully immersing themselves in her facial expressions, emotions, and feelings, they erase the separateness between Dani and them.
When Simon is found in the barn, his lungs have been pulled through his back, but he is still alive and breathing. The lungs are inflated and deflated by the diaphragm and the muscles in the trunk; once they were pulled out, he would immediately suffocate.
