For most Americans, Pinocchio is synonymous with the 1940 animated Disney movie about a wooden puppet whose pointy nose grows every time he tells a lie. But the original Italian story is not primarily about lying. Yes, Pinocchio tells lies, but that's just part of his general misbehavior; he's selfish and unreliable.
As is often the case, the original version of Pinocchio is a bit darker than its classic Disney adaptation. In fact, when Collodi first played with a story arc for his puppet, he concluded Pinocchio's adventures—which Collodi first wrote in serial form—in a brutal death by hanging.

Sadly, Figaro, Gepetto's beloved cat, looks suspiciously like a CGI creation, too. The mix of animation and human characters did very little to bring it to life. Even another cat in the film named Gideon isn't really real.
In Carlo Collodi's story, Honest John is an unnamed sly fox that pretends to be lame, but later gets his comeuppance by actually becoming lame and even losing his tail, having sold it for money. The character was reworked in the Disney iteration to be a charming villain, though is not objectively a real threat.
