Kala is a fictional ape character in Edgar Rice Burroughs's original Tarzan novel, Tarzan of the Apes, and in movies and other media based on it. She is the ape mother of Tarzan who raises him.
Kala adopts Tarzan shortly after the loss of a child that had been born to her. Kershak cautions Kala that Tarzan “won't replace the one we lost.” Kala's response is excellent: “I know that… but he needs me.”
Kerchak and Kala's baby is a minor character in Disney's 1999 animated feature film, Tarzan. He was the son of Kerchak and Kala. He first appears during the song "Two Worlds" and the beginning of the film, where he is seen crawling from his mother and onto Kerchak's arms.
Rosie O'Donnell as Terk (short for Terkina, a feminization of Terkoz merged with Teeka), Tarzan's best friend, a wisecracking gorilla. She is also Kala and Kerchak's niece, making her and Tarzan adoptive cousins. Michael Surrey served as the supervising animator for Terk.

Is Tarzan Based on a true story?
"William Mildin, 14th Earl of Streatham, was the real-life inspiration for Tarzan of the Apes. In 1868 he was shipwrecked off West Africa at the age of 11, and spent 15 years living in the jungle, after which he lived in Thrale Road (not much difference there, then)."
When Sabor spots the Baby, she begins chasing him; the Baby Gorilla tries to race back to his parents but Sabor kills and eats him. Kerchak and Kala hear their son's cries and race to try to protect him, but are too late, so Kala cries sadly in Kerchak's arms at the loss of her only child.
Due to Tarzan living his whole life in the jungle he has learned to speak various animal languages including gorilla, hummingbird, rhino and according to Tarzan he can even speak eagle despite it being rusty.
Even though many people consider Sabor an antagonist, deep down she isn't evil. Her killing Kala and Kerchak's baby and killing Tarzan's parents was simply in her nature. Like all carnivores Sabor only kills in order to survive and she probably saw Tarzan and his family as a threat.
THE LEGEND OF Tarzan is a film mainly set in the jungle, and features numerous high-action shots of animals – gorillas, lions, elephants and more.
