Princess Yue sacrificed her life to become the Moon Spirit, essential for the waterbenders' powers to work. Yue is now the spiritual representation of the Moon, not the Moon itself. Even though Yue died, she can still appear in the Netflix series as a spirit projecting herself into the physical world.
Aware the moon's power remained inside of her since her father's plea, Yue gives back her life to save Tui, the white koi fish. Yue's sacrifice restores balance, even at the cost of herself. But Yue does not die — she reemerges as the Moon Spirit.
