8. Evil Emperor Zurg. Bio: A purple caped toy with one mission: Destroy Buzz Lightyear. What makes him interesting: Zurg spoofs “Star Wars” in his Darth Vader-esque voice and gets plenty of laughs when he tells Buzz, "I am your father."
As you may recall, in Toy Story 2 there is a scene in which Zurg tells Buzz he is his father, in a nod to Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader from Star Wars. But in Lightyear, it is revealed that Zurg is an older, alternate version of Buzz.
Zurg's character appears to draw from Darth Vader, the villain in the original Star Wars trilogy, with a similar voice, appearance, and set of mannerisms.
It is later revealed that Zurg is actually the 50-year future self of Buzz Lightyear, wishing to time travel back to the past to prevent his crew from ever landing on the planet.
Beneath his mechanized suit, Emperor Zurg turns out to be none other than Buzz from another timeline, an older, embittered version (voiced by James Brolin) from a future that's figured out how to use Buzz's fuel to travel through time.
In the post credit scene, Zurg's robot suit is shown drifting through space, undamaged, but seemingly inactive. However, the eyes on Zurg's robot suit suddenly power on, indicating that he survived the explosion after the fight with Buzz.

In Lightyear, the evil Emperor Zurg is actually revealed to be a future version of Buzz (voiced by James Brolin), who traveled back in time to change his future. In a clever joke to the previous film, when Buzz sees the older version of himself, he first assumes it is his father.

The Space Ranger's functionality was later revealed to be updated with a special Utility Belt in Toy Story 2. It's very possible the programming inside Buzz gave him the instinct to freeze around humans even though that same programming convinced him he wasn't a toy.

Lightyear appears to be much more grounded and mature, so designing Zurg as a giant robot influenced by Japanese mecha is an excellent way to give him the status needed to be a "final boss" character for Buzz to defeat to save the day.

Zurg isn't Buzz's father in Lightyear – instead, he is a future version of Buzz. In a plot uncannily similar to Emmett and Rex Dangervest in The Lego Movie 2, an older Buzz travels back in time to finish the mission once and for all.
