In the original Land Before Time Spike is heard laughing after the gang save Cera from attacking Pachycephalosaurus. It is unknown who actually provided his laugh; the voice actor was never credited. Spike was voiced by Rob Paulsen from the second film on, but he hardly said any dialogue at all.

The films follow the friendship of a group of young ornithodirans (four dinosaurs and a pterosaur) named Littlefoot (a male Apatosaurus), Cera (a female Triceratops), Ducky (a female Saurolophus), Petrie (a male Pteranodon), and Spike (a male Stegosaurus).
Spike. Spike, possibly effects by Frank Welker (I), then voiced by Rob Paulsen (II-V, VII-XIV) and Jeff Bennett (VI), is a green male Stegosaurus or "Spiketail". Despite being the largest, he is actually the youngest of the original main characters; his hatching being witnessed by Ducky whose parents later adopted him.
Spike is the main Spiketail in the series. There is also a migrating herd of Spiketails seen in The Land Before Time VIII: The Big Freeze and The Forbidden Friendship. The only child seen in this herd is Tippy.

Ducky is actually referred to as a Saurolophus in the Land Before Time sing-along video and in some concept art for the original movie. Adding to the confusion, proper Parasaurolophus are depicted alongside Ducky's species throughout the series.

Death. The canonical, Bambi-like death of the parent occurs when, late one night near dawn, she dies protecting Littlefoot and Cera from Sharptooth. She puts up a tremendous fight and casts him into the "big underground", the bottom of a Grand Canyon-like gorge that has just been torn open by a tremendous earthquake.
That night, as Littlefoot follows a "Hopper", he encounters Cera again, and they play together briefly until a large "Sharptooth" attacks them. Littlefoot's mother comes to their rescue, receiving fatal injuries in the process. An earthquake swallows up the Sharptooth and divides Littlefoot and Cera from their herds.
Littlefoot is called a Brontosaurus on the original video cover for the first film, and then on the clamshell case he is called a Brachiosaurus. He was also called a Brachiosaurus at Rotten Tomatoes.com and at Movies.com. In the media, Littlefoot is alternatively referred to as an Apatosaurus and a Brontosaurus.
